Remesh vs decimate: choose the right mesh operation

Use decimation when an otherwise suitable mesh mainly needs fewer faces. Use remeshing when rebuilding the surface structure is the objective. Neither automatically creates deformation-ready edge flow. Blender documents distinct uses for decimation, voxel remeshing, and quad remeshing; these are not claims about Objectify's internal algorithm. Pro includes Objectify remesh options, but every delivered candidate still needs inspection.

Rebuild topology or reduce an existing surface?

Decimation progressively removes or simplifies parts of the existing topology. Remeshing generates a new surface arrangement. Blender recommends decimation rather than voxel or quad remeshing for reducing the face count of geometry that otherwise has no problems. Voxel remeshing can be useful for sculpt cleanup, while quad remeshing can support subdivision work. Choose by what must change, not by an assumption that a new mesh is always cleaner or that all quads are suitable for bending joints.

Compare candidates against the approved silhouette

Preserve the source and define the receiving task: static display, sculpting, subdivision, animation, or manufacturing. For a static reduction in Blender, try the relevant Decimate mode on a copy and compare intermediate results. For surface rebuilding, choose a remesh approach appropriate to the geometry and inspect thin features immediately. Review UVs, materials, and any deformation data after topology changes rather than assuming they remain usable. Export both candidates when comparing approaches so the judgment concerns the delivered asset rather than just editor counts.

Neither operation guarantees animation-ready edge flow

Blender's decimation ratio is calculated using triangles, so a mixed-polygon mesh can produce a different displayed face result than expected. Voxel size trades detail against density and can erase narrow forms. Quad remeshing does not clean intersecting geometry in the same way as voxel remeshing. Blender's manual warns that automatic remeshing is not a substitute for deliberate final deformation topology. Do not infer Objectify's implementation, UV preservation, or a measured speedup from these Blender tool descriptions.

Approve the delivered mesh rather than the target count

Compare outline, surface shading, openings, and silhouette at the required distance. Inspect delivered triangle and vertex counts, material slots, and texture placement. If the mesh deforms, run representative joint poses; if it prints, inspect sliced layers separately. Record the selected operation and settings with the candidate export. Reject a smaller mesh that breaks the intended task even when it meets a numerical budget, and retain the higher-detail source for later revisions.
